Working with the community to make a difference ….
Vitalcare has joined Sustrans to help tackle the big environmental issues that affect us all. You might see climate change as a global problem with only global answers, but Sustrans’ innovative and practical approach is already making a difference. They’re the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity promoting walking and cycling as healthy ways to get around.
Cycling and walking are often an option in our everyday lives, when you consider that a quarter of all journeys made by car are under 2 miles long. And children are desperate to cycle too- take the school run, on average under 3 miles– over 31% of children want to cycle to school but only 1% do.
So Sustrans has set about creating an environment that will actually help people to walk and cycle much more. Hence the National Cycle Network offering a mixture of traffic-calmed streets, quiet roads and traffic-free routes in communities all over the UK.
The National Cycle Network passes within 2 miles of 75% of the UK’s population. At the last count 232 million trips were made on the network in just one year. And every individual journey makes a positive difference, taking traffic off the roads , reducing emissions, and helping people do what they love and what we love- travel in ways that benefit our health and the environment.
Why not get involved yourself?
Sustrans projects:
Bike it:
We know that millions of children want to cycle to school in this country – yet only 1% do. Sustrans has stepped in to sort this out with Bike It, a ground-breaking project which has already quadrupled the number of children cycling wherever it operates.
TravelSmart:
Works with households offering tailor-made information and support, enabling people to walk, cycle and use public transport more often. It delivers measurable and sustained reductions in car use by enabling people to make a few changes to their daily travel choices when and where it suits them best.
Safe Routes:
Sustrans pioneered Safe Routes to schools in the UK to enable more kids to cycle and walk to school.
Active Travel:
Works with the health services to promote walking and cycling as health enhancing physical activities
Liveable Neighbourhoods:
Sustrans is updating city living for the 21st century, putting people at the heart of their communities. In liveable Neighbourhoods kids can play safely, people can shop locally, and there are green, open spaces.
